Michael Millman Ph.D., F.I.C.P.P.

EDUCATION:

1980 - Granted a Ph.D. in psychology (clinical) from the California School of Professional Psychology-Berkeley, an A.P.A. approved program.  My doctoral dissertation was a multifactor examination of the potential ameliorative benefits that aerobic exercise might have on stress related factors such as elevated serum lipids, blood pressure, state anxiety, and several other variables. During the last two years of my clinical training there was an increasing emphasis on the interfacing of clinical psychology and medicine;  especially in rural settings.

1975 - Obtained a Master of Arts degree in psychology from the California State University in Sacramento.  My thesis was a philosophical analysis of the nature of consciousness, based on the works of Ryle, Kuhn, and Wittgenstein.

1974 - Graduated with a B.A. (with honors) in psychology from California State University, Sacramento.

EXPERIENCE:

I have been in full-time private practice since July 1, 1985, and initiated part-time private practice in May 1982.  From about June of 1996 through December of 1996 I provided intensive out patient treatment services for chemical dependency. This included the supervision of a CADC counselor and urine toxicology screens. This was also done in conjunction with a psychiatrist (James Kennedy, MD) who had a sub-specialty in addiction medicine. From July 1983 to October 1989 my office was at the Natoma Medical Clinic, which was a family practice setting for two physicians.  Since October 1989 I have been in a separate office setting although I continue to work closely with local physicians.  Aside from my general office practice I provide consultation, evaluations, and direct treatment of patients at Mercy Hospital of Folsom where I am Allied Health Staff;  these are acute medical patients.  From June of 1986 until April of 1993 I was on the active medical staff of Fair Oaks Hospital.  I was also Director of Psychological Services at Fair Oaks Hospital from August of 1990 through September of 1992.  While on staff at this acute psychiatric hospital I maintained an active case load, including direct admission, management, discharge, and weekend call.  From 1993 I was on staff at Charter Hospital in Roseville, California, where I saw patients on an intermittent basis in the adult psychiatric unit and on the chemical dependency unit.

From 1987 through 2003 I provided consultation to Burger Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Agency in Folsom.

I have done pre-employment psychological evaluations for the Amador County Sheriff’s Department, the Amador County Probation Department (1985 - 87) and for the Folsom Police Department (1987 - 90).  I have also sat on hearing panels for the State Personnel Board as a hearing officer on an as needed basis.  These hearings were for appeals on disqualifications for peace officer candidates that have failed the psychological evaluation.

I have also provided psychological evaluations and treatment at a clinic that specializes in treating impotence (1987 - 89).  Additionally, I have provided consultation and treatment services to a foster placement service (1985-1986), performed court ordered mediations (Amador County), and provided psychological evaluations for Calaveras County Mental Health (1985 - 86).

In September of 1979 I began employment at the Amador County Mental Health Department.  I was employed full time there until 1984 when I began to reduce my hours, and continued on a part time basis until June 28, 1985. My duties at the mental health department included crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, marriage counseling, family therapy, play therapy for young children, psychological evaluations of children and adults (including neuropsychological testing), consultation to other staff on issues of treatment plans and diagnosis, evaluations on the need for medication referrals, consultations to local physicians concerning their patients (both in-patient and out-patient), and jail evaluations.  I also took a significant responsibility for treating both the victims and perpetrators of physical and sexual child abuse.  At times I also acted as a liaison between the clinic and other organizations such as various police agencies, the social services department, and schools.  Additionally, I provided direct supervision to a psychologist who came to volunteer his time at the clinic in order to obtain re-training in clinical work, and to the County’s drug and alcohol counselor.

I have participated in the training of volunteers for a 24-hour crisis line, and a regional training program for Mobile Intensive Care Nurses while at Amador County.  For the latter my presentation covered issues such as emergency management of violent patients, differential diagnosis of functional and organically based anxiety states, management and evaluation of suicidal patients, and the evaluation and acute management of depression.

From September 1978 through September 1979 I was an intern at El Dorado County Mental Health.  My duties there included general adult and limited children’s services, including evaluations.  I also provided crisis intervention, supervised a mental health worker, and took primary responsibility for the training of crisis intervention workers.  I took after hours crisis calls and took rotations as admitting staff at the County P.H.F.

From September 1977 through July 1978 I was an intern at East Yolo Health Services (Yolo County).  My duties involved both adult and children’s services (half time in each), court evaluations, and consultations to schools.

Starting in September 1976 and lasting through July 1977 I was a student trainee at Gladman Memorial Hospital in Oakland, California.  My placement was in the chemical dependency out-patient unit.  I was given training in working with substance abusers and in the use of biofeedback.

From 1975 thru 1977 I was a staff counselor at a residential treatment facility.  This was a group home for males and females from the age of ten to eighteen.
